Founding
Sun Island club was a nudist club that operated on 300 acres of leased land in northern San Diego county. It was a popular spot with area nudists. When the lease was lost in 1964 the members sought and found a new location. The struggling Swallows Resort in Harbison Canyon east of San Diego. The combined membership of the two clubs would boast over 500. The original owner, sDoc and Georgia Zehner sold the property to the Latimers in the fall of 1964 and the club was renamed Swallows – Sun Island.
Big Sue Latimer operated Swallows – Sun Island Resort with a strict no clothes management policy. The resort home to ASA naturist icon Cecile Allain.
Fire
In 2003 the property was destroyed by a wild fire that burned for two weeks and wiped out all but two of the residents. With assistance from AANR, The Naturist Society and local supporters the resort was saved.
