Maurice Parmelee was born on October 20, 1882 in Istanbul, to protestant missionary parents.1Maurice Parmelee papers . Parmelee was a sociologist, nudist criminologist and the author of 13 books, including Nudism in Modern Life, a book about the birth nudism and nature in modern society. He received an M.A. in economics from Yale University in 1908 and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1909. He served on the University of Missouri Faculty from 1910 to 1914. He was dismissed from his government position because of his stand on naturism.
