Pickleball History

Pickle Ball, considered the fastest growing sport in the US, was created in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum at Pritchard’s home in Bainbridge Island, Washington. ¹ The sport is played 4.8 million people in the United States. The three men were looking for an activity for there families, but could not find badminton equipment to use on a court so came up with the idea of using some old Ping-Ping paddles and a perforated ball. ²

Naked pickleball

Pickleball is newer but fast growing sport among naturists as well.³ In recent years many naturist venues have added new pickleball courts to their facilities.⁴ Florida retirement resorts has hundreds of people, (not all naturists) who play the game. ⁵

How to play?

It is a cross between platform tennis and paddleball, played on a tennis court. One pickleball site describes the game as a cross between badminton, tennis, and ping-pong. The ball is a slightly smaller than normal whiffle ball.

Pickleball is a court sport played on a badminton-sized court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic ball similar to a wiffle ball and composite or wooden paddles about twice the size of ping-pong paddles. It can be played indoors or outdoors and is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. In addition, the game has developed a passionate following due to its friendly, social nature, and its multi-generational appeal.⁷

Pickleball rules

Pickle Ball is played as either a single or doubles game, with the same size court used for both. At the most basic level, the game is played as such: one Pickler, (the unofficial term for players) serve the ball underhand over the net and diagonally into their opponents service court. The ball is then hit back and forth over the net until a player misses. Points are scored only by the serving team. Each game goes to 11 points, but you must win by two points.

Where to play naked pickleball?

Pickleball is a trending activity at naturist venues. ⁸ Several naturist resort websites advertise Pickleball as an activity option.

Empire Haven Camp has hosted a skill level tournament two years in a row. Pickleball may not surpass volleyball as the naturist activity of choice but it is an exciting option for nudists of all ages who want to stay active outdoors. ⁹
