Naturism in Spain

The emergence of naturism in Spain is due in part to the development of anarcho-naturism in the 1920’s ¹Naturism And Anarchy In Spain Various flavors of the two isms developed in Spain during the 1930’s with influences from Lebensreform, integral naturism and libertarian naturism. ²Land of Somnis

Under the the facist regime of Franco naturism was initially tolerated then outlawed, though naturists continued in a more discreet manner. After the death of Franco  the legal restrictions were removed. In 1979 the the first Spanish naturist resort Costa Natura was established. ³Naturism And Anarchy In Spain

The Spanish Naturist Federation, Federación Española de Naturismo or FEN is the Spanish national naturist organization with regional associations like the Madrid Naturist Association. FEN works to keep Spanish beaches open for clothing optional use and to keep the naturism in Spain focused on non sexual clothes free recreation. ⁴THE THIRD BATTLE OF NATURISM

Spain is a favorite holiday destination for naturists. It has a fairly laid back attitude to the nude body, in Spain you have a civil right to be nude almost anywhere. It is legal to be nude in public in Spain since 1988. ⁵Is nudism legal in Spain? Some municipalities have threatened to fine persons found to be nude in public beyond beaches. The Spanish high court has affirmed the legality of  public nudity in a 2023 ruling.⁶Spanish high court backs man’s right to walk naked in the streets

Naturist accommodations and clothing optional/nude beaches exist across Spain. In spite of the constitutional legality of public nudity on beaches, individual Spanish municipalities have fought and in some cases won the right to limit or curtail the clothing optional use of beaches.⁷No clothes? Court rules against Spanish naturists The battle between naturists and municipalities over nude beaches continues today with FEN working to protect the right to use the beaches for clothing optional purposes.⁸“If the Spanish Naturist Federation did not exist, nudism would already be banned from nearly all Spanish beaches” The push by municipalities to reclaim beaches for textile tourism seems to be driving the conflict with naturists.⁹Why nudists are being pushed out of Spain’s beaches

One of the highlights of Spanish naturism is Vera Playa. Located on the Almeria coast of Spain, Vera Playa is one of the largest nude beaches in the world. In addition to a expansive beach Vera Playa also has a hotel and bar and a naturist zone with homes and apartments where people can go clothes free through the streets and into supermarkets or shops.¹⁰The Spanish nudist beach which is the largest in the world – complete with naturist bars and hotel
