Wandervogels

Wandervogels was a health and nature youth movement similar to Lebensreform that emerged in response to industrialization in the 1890s in Germany. The movement which mean wandering birds was characterized by hikes in nature. Initially the movement was exclusive to boys but later included girls as well.

The move t is sometimes referred to as the first “hippie” movement. Photo showing long haired Wandervogel members dancing nude, and pursuing other Lebensreform practices like vegetarianism, natural medicine and nudism earned the movement that description. ¹Wandervogel Health practices like nude nature baths were adopted by the emerging German naturist movement.²The history of Naturism ORPLID

During the Second World War the Nazi Hitler youth movement absorbed and later discarded the principles of the Wandervogels. ³Wandervogel Remnants of the movement continue to exist in Germany today, dedicated to original values of the movement individual freedom, human rights, self-responsibility, internal truthfulness, and reverence for nature. ⁴Wandervogel
