Other prominent naturist activists in the US like Zelda Suplee were activists for the LGBTQ community of the day. Despite this historical presence however, members of the LGBTQIA are not always welcomed and acknowledged in the naturist community.
Efforts to include
Lee Baxandall sought to welcome the gay community into the naturist community through his free beaches initiative. However, not every naturist was as welcoming and eventually Gay Naturists International was formed to fill the void.
While some naturist venues accept LGBTQIA people as members as a visitors, some still remain restrictive membership requirement and define a couple and a man and woman for the sake of preserving family naturism.
