U.S. Naturism is generally accepted as beginning in 1929. German immigrants like Kurt Barthel brought the modern European practice of naturism called free body culture or FKK to America. Bernarr Macfadden, body builder, health reform advocate and publisher of Physical Culture magazine also played a significant role in the development of American nudism. 1The American Roots of Nude Culture in the United States
The east
In 1929, a German immigrant Kurt Barthel, started the American League for Physical Culture. 2 Brief history of naturism: The contemporary age The first nudist or naturist gathering in the United States was held on Labor Day 1929. Kurt Barthel an outing of immigrant German nudists to a location near Peekskill N.Y. Some reports suggests that previous attempt was made at such an event in 1917 by Will Calhoun Walker who gathered a group with the intention to form a nudist organization in Missouri. 3 The Nudists, 1959: Johnson, Donald pg 17 Barthel’s group in New York was later organized into the American League for Physical Culture. It was the first officially recorded naturist group in the United States.
In 1957 the United States Supreme Court ruled that simple nudity in and of itself as opposed to obscene behavior was not illegal. This had the effect of paving the way for the growth of U.S. naturism.
The west
The 1960s saw a significant growth of naturist clubs. In the western region of the U.S. saw many clubs started on vacant land close to high p to population areas. Naturism in the United States in has been a story of feast and famine. A 2006 national US Roper poll reported 74% of Americans “believe that people who enjoy nude sunbathing should be able to do so … as long as they do so at a beach that is accepted for that purpose.” 6 NEF/Roper Poll 2006

Naked swimming in U.S.
Naked swimming in the U.S. was fairly for men in public swimming at venues like the YMCA and schools and swimming holes. From 1913 to the late 1970s Naked swimming in U.S. schools was a common practice.
Nudity on United States public lands
There are no laws in the U.S. banning nudity on lands owns by the federal government, though local ordinances can take precedence. As a result some naturist take advantage of the prohibition to practice social nudity on United States public lands.
